August 7, 2023

  • Journal

I have to say I have struggled this past week.  When I look back at August 6th of last year to August 6th 2023, it brings me to my knees.  Then I look at August 7th of 2022 compared to now and -WOW!  I am grateful.

Allie went from being a college athlete to a quadriplegic without notice.  She went from skiing, running, hiking, biking to sitting for hours on end.  Where she once relieved her stress by her activity, she now has learned to sit for hours on end quietly, appreciating all the little things the rest of us miss. Allie has learned to be strong in a new way, a new physical strength, a new mental strength and determination but also in typical Allie fashion she has helped teach us how to deal with all of this. I am grateful.

Our lives have also changed. Our independent daughter now relies on us once again for things she doesn’t want to. Our days are busy and some are tough but we laugh- I am grateful.

Allie was a gift and believe me her light continues to shine in our world. Her wit, humor, strength and compassion know no bounds.  She has found the strength to move forward and smile.  We Have Her! I am grateful

In this past year we learned the value of good Dr’s and nurses, many of whom now are good friends.  We are in awe and so appreciative of our family, friends and communities’ efforts to support us all in every way imaginable.  Dana and I could not have done this without all of your help and support.  I cry more over your incredible generosity than anything.  I am grateful.

As we enter this next phase, we still believe anything is possible.  We have come so far and hope for continued growth.  Craig this fall will give Allie another boost.  Meanwhile she plans to start volunteering in the schools.  She has begun to reach out to others with SCI – there is another whole community she has tapped into for help and to start trying to help and give back. She will bike and she will ski I am certain; it will just look different and be so exciting.  Who knows what else she will conquer! I am grateful.

Thank you all.  This journey is far from over but you have helped us all stay strong and push forward.  To be surrounded by all your love and support all I can say is (and I speak for our entire family)- We are so very grateful!   Lisa

I will post again when we get back from Craig this fall and let you know where things stand!

She will be riding in the Kelly Brush ride for team Allie B in Sept to help raise money for this wonderful foundation!
